Velvet Verbosity

The purpose of a blog seems self-evident. Don’t call me on my narcissistic tendencies.

Too Much Fun - Too Much Work - Too Much Travel

Too much work, fun, travel has left me wiped out and needing sleep and rejuvenation.  Thus the lack of posting.  I’ll be back soon with highlights from the trip, the past couple of days, 100 Words, and who knows what else. Stay tuned.

We await your return, with baited breath. (If I could just figure out what you’re supposed to use for bait …)

As long as you’re not waiting for a bikini shot. It was too cold for my bikini anyway.

By the way, I also took the liberty of looking up the history of the phrase “with baited breath” and found this:

“And now, the truth, which is actually pretty simple. The word “bated” is an aphetic, or clipped, form of the word “abated,” and means “lessened or restrained.” In other words, to “wait with bated breath” is to hold your breath while waiting for something to happen. Although “abate” is a fairly common word, virtually the only place you’ll find “bated” these days is in the phrase “with bated breath.”

Well, I guess that’s the illiterate backwoodsman in me - I normally make mental note of people who misuse words and phrases and I stick my mental nose in the air. I wonder what you’re supposed to do when you’re on the receiving end? Anyway, thank you for the enlightening bit of research. I will use that phrase more judiciously and appropriately in the future.

Nice to have you back. I am waiting for the next 100 Word Challenge with bated breath.
